As a whole class, click through the following slides to learn about how to care for your laptop.
The three biggest threats to student laptop (in order) are:
Broken screens
Liquid spills
Broken keyboard keys (gaming)
Almost all damage incidents are preventable.
What can we learn by looking at last year's laptop damage data?
Most laptop accidents happen because students act before thinking. Speed kills! Slow down and act with purpose.
(your teacher will demonstrate)
Open the lid slowly & carefully from the center of the screen (so there is no twisting of the screen)
Pick up the laptop from the base. Never pick up the laptop from the screen.
"Swish before you shut!" Then close the lids gently.
Use two hands if moving the laptop to a different locations.
Don't walk and use the laptop at the same time.
At your locker, don't leave the laptop on the ground - Stand it on edge against the locker or between your legs.
In your locker, leave your laptop on its edge - not flat with items on top.
Place water bottles on the floor when using your laptop in a table. Keep all other food/drinks away.
Don't store other items in your laptop bag - especially items like earbuds and pencils that can put 'point-pressure' on your screen
The number 1 laptop enemies
Earbuds
Pencil & Pen
Charge Cable
Whenever you close your laptop, remeber to 'Swish & Shut'
Your laptop bag is designed to protect your laptop from knocks and bumps, but it also needs to be treated carefully. Especially the zippers!
Using the shoulder strap is OPTIONAL. The zippers and strap fittings are made of plastic, so treat them carefully.
You get one free bag. Broken bags can be replaced at the Eagle Stop for $25.
You don't want to be paying to repair another student's school laptop because you accidently caused damage by closing the lid on top of their hand, or broke a key on the keyboard by messing around. So hands off!
See what Mr B has to say about some of our past students failure to follow good laptop care rules.
Create a poster using either Google Slides (easy) or Apple Pages (advanced) on your laptop to teach other middle school students about laptop care.
Pick ONE topic from the the Laptop Care slides. Here are some suggestions:
Clear your keyboard of objects before closing the lid. (#1 killer!)
Don't eat/drink near your laptop
Always carry your laptop safely.
Don't pick up your laptop by the screen
Always zip your laptop case completely before you leave class.
Keep your laptop away from liquids and food.
Store your laptop in your locker safely.
Don't crowd your laptop in your backpack.
Before you begin designing, look at the posters below. These posters look good because the creator followed a set of graphic design rules.
Need photos.
You can use any of these photos taken of SAS laptops
Or search Google for images that a free to use for non-commercial use
New to Pages? Spend some time looking at these 'how to' resources:
'Getting Started with Pages' (slide deck, older version of Pages)
'Pages Help' (Apple help site)
'Create a Flyer in Pages' (YouTube video - 10 mins)
Once you have completed your poster you will need to submit it to your Advisory class
Adjust the 'View' settings of your app so you can see your entire poster on screen.
Take a screenshot of your finished poster. (Command-Shift-4 and then draw a box around your poster. This will create a screenshot saved on your desktop.)
Rename the screenshot file (find it on the Desktop) of your poster to "Laptop Care Poster - your name"
Open Google Classroom and click into your Advisory class.
Open the assignment called "Boot Camp - Laptop Care [Sci]"
Submit your poster screenshot file. Click Add > File and drag the image file into the box and click Upload. Turn-In.
IMPORTANT - Make sure you click 'Turn In' and then also confirm by clicking 'Turn In' again.
Earn the 'Creativity' badge for your laptop license. Each advisor will select 1-2 student posters from their advisory group to receive a badge sticker.
