Digital Citizenship Agreement
In order to participate in the Middle School Laptop Program, you will sign a Digital Citizenship Agreement (DCA). In this lesson, we hope you will gain an understanding of what it means to be a good digital citizen. At the end of the lesson, you will sign the SAS Digital Citizenship Agreement.
The SAS Digital Citizenship agreement is all about RESPECT and PROTECT.
REMEMBER: Everything you do online creates your Digital Footprint, and we want to avoid colleges/universities/employers saying things to us like:
"I've been looking at your digital footprint, and it looks like you've stepped in something..."

Read the two sections 'Respect Yourself' and 'Protect Yourself'.
Respecting and protecting yourself means looking after your personal data and privacy, engaging in safe Internet practises and creating a positive digital footprint as you go through middle school.
Watch this video about the digital footprint you are leaving online? As you begin middle school, think about the experiences shared by the teenagers in the video.
By the time you finish Middle School and High School, what do you want your digital footprint to say about you?
As a class, briefly answer this question:
Do you think someone would really stand up at an assembly and say these things? Would they say it online? What's the difference?
How do you think it feels to be bullied, and why?
Using a Venn diagram on the whiteboard, explore this question:
What are some of the similarities and differences between bullying and cyberbullying?
Your teacher will handout one Why Care? Cyberbullying worksheet per group.
Read the short story about Kevin and José. On your own piece of paper, quickly draw a diagram of this event. Share your drawing with your group.
On the diagram of the event you drew earlier, sketch in your proposed solution. Draw yourself as a character. What would you do?
We all know what the right answers are for situations like Kevin's. If we all know what to do, why does bullying still exist both in person and online?
Experts say that standing up for other kids is the best way to prevent cyberbullying. Let's stand up for each other! Don't be a bystander, be an UPSTANDER!

The activity for this lesson is to sign the DCA and make a pledge to be a responsible digital citizen at SAS.
Collect a printed copy of the SAS Digital Citizenship Agreement (DCA) to use when making your pledge.
Read through the entire document, add your name, sign and date the document at the bottom.
Go to Toddle, to your Advisory class, to the assignment called 'Citizenship: SS'
In the 'Your Reponse section, choose 'Add Media'. Choose Video.
Hold up your signed agreement, look at the camera, hold up your right hand and say "I, <your name>, pledge to follow the SAS Digital Citizenship Agreement and uphold the SAS core values in my online behavior."
