In order to participate in the Middle School Laptop Program, you will sign a Digital Citizenship Agreement (DCA). In this lesson, we hope you will gain an understanding of what it means to be a good digital citizen. At the end of the lesson, you will sign the SAS Digital Citizenship Agreement and post a photo to your blog.
The SAS Digital Citizenship agreement is all about RESPECT and PROTECT.
Read the two sections 'Respect Yourself' and 'Protect Yourself'.
Respecting and protecting yourself means looking after your personal data and privacy, engaging in safe Internet practises and creating a positive digital footprint as you go through middle school.
Watch this video about the digital footprint you are leaving online? As you begin middle school, think about the experiences shared by the teenagers in the video.
By the time you finish Middle School and High School, what do you want your digital footprint to say about you?
The next two sections of the DCA are titled "Respect Others" and "Protect Others". This part of the DCA is about not being a bully AND about standing up for victims of bullying.
Watch the video.
As a class, briefly answer this question:
Do you think someone would really stand up at an assembly and say these things? Would they say it online? What's the difference?
How do you think it feels to be bullied, and why?
Using a Venn diagram on the whiteboard, explore this question:
What are some of the similarities and differences between bullying and cyberbullying?
Your teacher will handout one Why Care? Cyberbullying worksheet per group.
Read the short story about Kevin and José. On your own piece of paper, quickly draw a diagram of this event. Share your drawing with your group.
On the diagram of the event you drew earlier, sketch in your proposed solution. Draw yourself as a character. What would you do?
We all know what the right answers are for situations like Kevin's. If we all know what to do, why does bullying still exist both in person and online?
Experts say that standing up for other kids is the best way to prevent cyberbullying. Let's stand up for each other! Don't be a bystander, be an UPSTANDER!
As a class, ask yourselves:
If it's on the internet, is it OK to download, copy or share it? What things might be OK to download or share? What things are definitely not OK to download/share?
What is copyright?
We use copyrighted material every day. We enjoy media as consumers. (We watch videos and listen to songs and read websites.) And we also download and use media for our own creations. (We make posts, presentations, and music or art mashups.) On the other hand, everything we produce as creators is also automatically copyrighted material. No one else can take my writing or drawing or music creation and use it without my permission.
Please read the part of the DCA that deals with respect and protection of intellectual property.
The two most important things to remember from this section of the DCA are:
Only use media you have permission to use and always cite it.
When you purchase music, movies, software etc, do not give it out freely to other people. (And don't use it in school projects!)
Much of this section is being discussed in other Boot Camp lessons (charging your battery, keeping your laptop in its case, taking care of your laptop, etc.).
Read the section of the DCA on respect and protection of property.
The activity for this lesson is to sign the DCA and make a pledge to be a responsible digital citizen at SAS.
Collect a printed copy of the SAS Digital Citizenship Agreement (DCA) to use when making your pledge.
Take a Photo Booth selfie of yourself holding your the DCA with your right hand raised. (See Mr. Riley's photo below.)
Export the picture to the Desktop and call it 'DCA Selfie - your name' [Not sure how to use Photo Booth? Remember: Ask 3 Before Me!]
Open up Google Classroom and click into your Advisory class.
Find the assignment called 'Boot Camp - DCA [SS]' and click to open it.
Submit your 'DCA selfie' picture. Click Add > File and drag the image file into the box and click Upload.
Add a private comment that says: "I, <your name>, pledge to follow the SAS Digital Citizenship Agreement and uphold the SAS core value in my online behavior."
Turn-In.
IMPORTANT - Make sure you click 'Turn In' and then also confirm by clicking 'Turn In' again.
